As we gear up for another new year of new beginnings, I thought I’d share some of my not so new wardrobe go-tos. My list of 10 Winter Essentials is comprised of basics & accessories, that I tend to gravitate towards on a weekly basis. While most of these are general pieces that you may already own, bear in mind that this list is tailored to MY style, so some things included may not suit your taste.
Wool Trench Coat
Rather pairing with a hoodie & leggings, or laying over your work-wear, a classic wool trench can elevate any look to the next level. In addition to a maximum coverage of warmth, wool trenches add an effortless sophistication to any ensemble.
Wool trench coats can get a little pricey, so if you’re on a budget like I am you can try:
Buying out of season when seasonal merchandise is marked down.
Shopping second-hand stores, such as Poshmark.
Buying from a site that offers Afterpay, allowing you to gradually pay off your items, in 4 equal payments.
Shopping for a Wool/Poly blend (although you may be sacrificing warmth & quality for savings)
If you’re over the traditional trench, try opting for a printed trench instead. Notice how the houndstooth print adds a pop & pizazz to this simple all black look!
2. Moto Jacket
My next choice of outerwear is definitely a moto jacket. They add edge to a simple look. Especially by taking it a step further & opting for a statement moto, like this to spice up the classic t-shirt & jean combo.
3. Statement Blazer
I’m one of those weird people who loves wearing turtlenecks. I wear at least one a week! They’re perfect for layering, or wearing tucked in to high-waisted jeans or skirts. If you’ve made it this far, I’m sure you can tell that I wear an abundance of black; so my 3 turtlenecks that remain on rotation are:
Plain black ribbed
Black & white striped
5. Crew Neck
This little number from Zara, is my favorite crew neck of the moment. Not only is it comfy, but it fits right in with my black & white uniform & has a cute message! Crew necks are perfect for dressing up under a blazer or dressing down with a pair of joggers!
6. Chambray Shirt
A classic Chambray shirt is more of a year-round essential, and a personal lazy-day must have. You can catch me in a Chambray top about every other week (especially on Fridays). I think I have about 4 chambray or denim tops, & I’m probably not stopping there. Chambray shirts take the guesswork out of having to put together an outfit, & there’s a million different ways to style them. During the winter months I like layering under sweaters or styling with jeans & boots for a good ole Canadian Tuxedo!
A good go to pair of jeans is a MUST! Personally, I’m a high waisted jeans type of girl, & there’s 3 washes that I gravitate toward:
I’m also loving wide legs jeans and girlfriend jeans at the moment. They’re more on the comfortable side but still super chic!
My handbag choice is typically a small crossbody satchel or a backpack, & I tend to only carry my large tote to work during the week. This happens to be the backpack that I carry the most, and I got it from H&M a few years ago for under $20!
Hats are a definite MUST for me because 99.9% of the time, I’m more so wearing them to avoid combing my hair rather than for accessorizing purposes. While I have a nice little hat assortment, my current favs are bakerboy hats & boater hats. Actually, I have to admit, I’m currently REALLY addicted to baberboy hats!
I bought these Chelsea sock boots from Zara a few seasons ago, on clearance for under $30 & they’re certainly my favs! They’re so comfortable & classic, I have to restrain myself from wearing them nearly everyday! When I’m not wearing these, you can usually catch me in some style of combats or my midi block heel boots.
